After a few months of idyllic optimism, the Kashmir valley is once again in strife with the Indian forces and the youths are increasingly employing themselves in ‘kani jung.’ I wonder if we, keepers of one of the oldest world civilization, have forgotten the basic principles governing individuals in a society.Freedom is of a paramount importance in terms of – attaining peaceful existence for oneself and the family; being gainfully employed in order to support, sustain and provide for the family; being able to express oneself freely without any fear; having access to proper basic infrastructure and facilities. These are some of the prime requirements for any individual to develop and nurture a sense of belongingness to the land where he/she belongs.
Government has a cut out job to provide the necessities of life to all its individuals and ensure safe and peaceful environment to all its citizens. Kashmiris lack this sense of belongingness to the Indian state and the reasons are best known to the Indian populace. Political and social ignorance, chauvinism, crooked state policies, infringement on the basic human rights and vandalizing the spirit of Kashmiri people, has led to the situation that we find ourselves in. Leaving aside Kashmir for the moment, five of our most populated states have taken to arms against the national government! The Maoist violence is making Kashmir resistance look like a schoolboys’ activism! Can we, for a moment, let go of our alter ego and give a thought to this ‘heaven’ on the earth? I feel that we are belittling ourselves by ignoring the real issues behind the upheavals in Kashmir, the North East and the Central region of our Country. Imagine, separatism is lurking openly in NORTH, EAST & CENTRE! What remains is now only the WEST & the SOUTH! What have we done to ourselves and our countrymen? Even today, it is the time to wake up from slumber and address these issues with sincerity, truthfulness and without bothering for the results. Oh my beloved birth place, will I see you mutilated in many pieces of land??
